English III. 5 December 6, 2012 Term Paper Title Mark Zuckerberg, a name less well known than Facebook, is actually the genius behind the most popular social media site up to date. Rather than just graduating from Harvard, he chose to develop his own company. In only six years, the social media site Facebook has attracted over five hundred million users. Today, Facebook is one of the fastest growing companies in the world. About seven hundred thousand people sign up for Facebook all around the world every day (Kirkpatrick, 12). To accomplish such greatness, Zuckerberg uses only four methods.

He is well-organized and a dedicated worker, he is able put his knowledge into his work, he is not doing it just for the money, and he is a kind, humble and friendly man. Mark Zuckerbergs’ first key to success is that he has the mentality to not give up and to keep improving. Every day, Facebook is renovated and new upgrades are added and this has been going on since the day he had the idea of the billion dollar program. Not only does this happen with his knowledge, but also his tremendous urge to push through and improve everything.

The author of the book The Facebook Effect described, “On January 11th 2004, Zuckerberg paid a website thirty-five dollars to register a web address for Facebook and by the end of May, it was already operating at thirty-two schools and had almost 100,000 users (Kirkpatrick, 42). ” While Zuckerberg was becoming an accidental billionaire, other students at his age didn’t even know what they wanted to do for a living after their graduation. Zuckerberg has become one of the youngest billionaires through his method of dedication and willingness.

His second key to success is being able put his knowledge into his work. Mark Zuckerberg majored in both computer science and psychology when he was at Harvard University. He described to Time Magazine, “I was always interested in how those two things combined (Grossman, 46). ” He knows and understands a remarkable amount about other people’s thoughts and behaviors as the interviewer of Time Magazine wrote, “There are other people who code as well as Zuckerberg, but none get the human psyche the way he does (Grossman, 46). Mark explains, “Most of what Facebook is about is seeing how people were connected through mutual references. Also it was a very basic communications tool, aimed at solving the simple problem of keeping track of your friends and what is going on with them (Kirkpatrick, 32). ” Zuckerberg had the insight that people would be hooked by a website that allows them to connect with friends in such a close way, and it worked. Zuckerberg showed the world that his two majors, computer science and psychology, could change the world.

Zuckerberg’s third key to success is that he is not interested in the money, but the program he is developing. Before the creation of Facebook, Zuckerberg created a program that both Microsoft and AOL tried to purchase. Rather than accepting this offer and receiving a tremendous amount of money from two of the most successful companies in the world, he chose to upload this program online for free and enrolled at Harvard instead. In the movie The Social Network, Zuckerbergs roommate, who also was his business partner, thought about putting advertisements to earn money on their Facebook page.

However, Zuckerberg didn’t acknowledge this idea (The Social Network). He stated that, “making the Facebook fun was more important than making it a business (Kirkpatrick, 33). ” If Zuckerberg concentrated more about the money he is going to earn rather than the needs of the users, Facebook would not be where it is today. Finally, his last but not least key to success is his kindness and friendliness to others. Many people might think that Mark Zuckerberg is cocky and arrogant because most people that make it to the top out of nowhere usually are.

But he is the complete opposite. The Facebook headquarters located in Los Angeles is a large office that has working stations for all of the workers with offices and computers. Zuckerberg designed this office or headquarters in a way that no one is above, or lower than anyone. Everybody is at the same level, even if you’re the CEO. Not only has he created an incredible social media site, he has also created an incredible office. Zuckerberg has a great relationship with each and every worker at the headquarters. When he talks to his co-workers, they are so adamant in their avowals of affection for his. And you know that it is not because they want to keep their jobs, people really like him (Grossman, 39). Throughout his journey, Zuckerberg has never taken full credit to this amazing website but thinks that it is a team effort. With this positive outlook and attitude on life, he has reached higher accomplishments than he has ever imagined. Bibliography: Kirkpatrick, David.
